It was many hours of driving yesterday to cross the lower part of the peninsula, but there was a lot of interesting stuff to see along the way. We have now been exposed to many different Mayan building styles (yesterday was mainly Rio Bec) in many amazing settings. Although all of these are grouped under the umbrella term “Maya”, it has become obvious during this trip that there were huge differences in culture between these groups, despite their similarities in certain areas.
Originally we were going to stay in Chetumal, but on a whim decided to go a little further up the coast to Bacalar, where we are today. There is a lagoon here that is gorgeous, and we are enjoying the tranquillity. I even woke up early this morning to watch the sunrise over the water.
