Olaf and I took a little side trip to visit the cenotaphs at Ahar. This is where the Maharanas of Udaipur and their relatives are memorialized. It is like a cemetery, but without bodies, just markers. The bodies are all of course cremated and ashes put in the Ganga. One of the interesting (and horrible) things to note on many of the older cenotaphs was the marking of wives that had performed sati (throwing themselves on the funeral pyre of their husband) before this practice was outlawed.

  1. Mom says:

I told Bob that–as much as I really do love him–the thought of throwing myself on a fire is just not appealing!

You look good. Had breakfast with Josh this morning, and he’ll be here for Thanksgiving.
