I just love the bumper stickers I come across in this part of the country.
One of the most maddening things about the Tea Baggers (Tea Party movement, whatever) is their utter lack of policy specifics. They don’t seem to have a single verifiable, actual policy that they are against. They just hate that “their” guy isn’t in charge. While it is true that there was a massive amount of dismay and loathing of Bush and Cheney (and their administration), these were rooted in their actual policy decisions.
To give you a rough idea of the quality of the debate, let’s compare grievances:
Basically, they are tribal. For them, it matters not what their leaders do or don’t do, it matters only that they view them as “US” and not “THEM”. They lash out for no other reason than they hate what they perceive to be “OTHER” (fill in the racist blank here). Looking at many of the signs from this past weekend’s demonstrations in DC were disturbing reminders of the hatred that ignorance breeds.
I am not sure how it is possible to have meaningful debate about anything with people like this. Strongly held beliefs that form outside of empirical evidence have a name: religion. And there is no way to debate religion with people, they believe what they believe and no amount of logic will persuade them otherwise. One can only have hope that the future will be more rational, compassionate, and accepting, and work towards that goal in whatever ways we can.
