(o, by the way, kolkata has had protest-marches since 1999, and bombay has done it for the last 3 yrs on aug 16). the march-focus has traditionally been protest, not pride, but this is the first time i've heard of them using this "the british shud apologize" angle - read the newspaper article myself, and frankly, it does sound a little silly. but i do think that "last minority" sales line is pretty good, and that we should carry on finding ways of seeing how queer rights and other issues may be adapted to the Indian context, rather than uncritically employ a Western rhetoric of Gay Pride. This is the first time, I think, that elements of "pride" have entered the protest-marches (I'm considering the earlier June 29 marches also), and while this experiment was largely successful, the protest angle should not be completely lost either, as it has arguably been in Western Pride parades.

mmmmm…… well, i was always aware that one of the “sales” thrusts of the bombay march has been: “we’re the minority in india that still hasn’t got independence”, and i believe that’s one of the reasons they hold their march on aug 16, and didn’t fall in with the other cities this yr.
