Religion explains both the resistance to science and evolution, AND the policies of the past seven years…Not just “religion,” but fundamentalism, which rejects reason and empirical knowledge in favor of “because God says so.”
The larger question, of course, is “what explains Americans’ stubborn adherence to the least nuanced, least intellectually sophisticated versions of religious beliefs that sane people elsewhere in the world have largely discarded?” I, for one, haven’t a clue.
Personally, I think it’s the fact that elitism is on the wane and insincere equality is on the rise. One good example:

Years ago, Sherri Shepherd would have been fired from a TV show if she suggested, stupidly, that the world wasn’t round. Or worse, that she lacked the intellectual curiosity to answer that question for herself.
It is patently inappropriate for people so stupid to have jobs like that. They don’t deserve them, and should work in a field better suited to their marked lack of intelligence. It’s shameful.
