A Good Leh

Thursday, Juliette and I discovered (to our delight) a wonderful side of Leh not really mentioned in the guidebooks. On our way to see the palace, we wound through an incredible maze of houses and streets all stacked upon each other and leading up to the palace. The palace itself is undergoing massive reconstruction, and unlike such projects in the west, India has no compunctions about letting people wander around a dangerous building site. It was really cool (and life threatening)!

Friday we explored this part of town a little further and went up to the gompa behind the palace, nearly killing ourselves in the process (it was steep! and hot! and high altitude, remember?) but it was worth it. Check out the album below. And give me a little time to put captions on them…
